Xi Jinping: Everything you need to know about China's president
Xi Jinping, who has been dubbed China's populist leader, has sought to portray himself as being in touch with the people since he was elected president in March 2013.
He is the first leader born after the 1949 revolution, and is secretary general of the Chinese Communist Party, which boasts more than 80 million members.
The 62-year-old, who is this week making the first official visit to Britain by the Chinese head of state in 10 years, officially holds the highest office in China, exerting influence over domestic and foreign affairs and the military, but is answerable to the National People's Congress - China's parliamentary body.
